The basics

  • Hainan's high-speed railway runs around the island. The east line is the quick way between Haikou and Sanya, about 1.5 hours.
  • It also stops at towns along the east coast, such as Wanning, if you want a quieter beach stop on the way.
  • A common plan: land in Haikou, spend a day or two there, then take the train to Sanya.

Tickets

  • Buy on Trip.com with a foreign card, or on 12306. See buying train tickets.
  • Your passport is your ticket. Use the staffed lane if the gate won't read it.
  • Chinese holidays sell out fast, especially Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and the October 1 Golden Week. Book as soon as your plans are fixed.

Getting to the station

Use DiDi and give the station's Chinese name. Haikou has more than one station, so check which one your ticket uses.
